No behavior occurs in a vacuum, which is to say that all behavior is motivated. One’s spiritual development is no different. There is always a compelling need behind one’s spiritual endeavors. Ego’s role is akin to a sailor. A sailor learns to use the sails, how to rig them, how to use the rudder, and most importantly, how to use the wind, currents and weather. The sailor must be very skilled if he wants to come back from the sea safely. But he cannot control the wind, currents or weather. These he must learn about and follow. Ego is the sailor. Ego must learn and be strong. God is the wind, water and weather. Ego must follow God if Ego wants peace and joy. Regarding spiritual development, Ego feels a compelling need, embraces it, and follows it. Accumulate virtue and positivity. Do the right thing. Learn to be centered and open. Listen inside and outside for cues and follow.
